The names of all 82 Chibok schoolgirls freed from Boko Haram’s abduction over the weekend have been released after President Buhari’s meeting with the now young women.

Supposedly these are the #chibokgirls. Lined up to see Mr President #buhari before he came to London

In a deal brokered by The Red Cross on behalf of the Nigerian government and the Islamic group, the girls were released in exchange for 5 Boko Haram commanders, though they are unable to return home or meet their parents without supervision.

Their release plus the freedom of 21 girls last year bring the total number of freed girls to 103 – excluding those that managed to escape captivity. At least 113 remain missing.

Some of the faces of the then schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram
In 2014, 200+ schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok, Borno

The abduction took place in April 2014 where a total of 224 girls were taken by the group from a boarding school in Chibok, Borno. Some girls managed to escape in the process and others through time, with some now residing in America.

Returning the commanders in exchange for the young women is thought to be a high risk strategy given the potential damage they pose with additional extremists.
